Acrylic Wave
Immigration; We hear this word and think of policy and politics, why don’t we think of people? Immigrants, documented or otherwise, are individuals with unique stories. The beads that make up this wave are meant to honor and represent these individuals. The height of the beads change as the gears rotate above, which changes the distance of the screws the strings are threaded through. Our class has been working with the transformation of shapes, which are very important to the operation of gears. Gears rotate in opposite directions, which causes two points to become farther apart before coming back together. Our piece uses that rotation to move the strings up and down the full diameter of the inner circle. In original prototypes, as many as four gears were used to move one drop. This concept of adding the diameters of four 4 cm gears became two 8 cm gears, which then became one 16 cm gear. We realized that we only needed one gear to create a 16 cm change in the length of the string, which stayed consistent through these changes. Our hope is that this piece will remind viewers that for people, issues, and everything in between, there is more than meets the eye.
